Wall-Mounted, Deck-Mounted or Freestanding Bath Taps?

MARNHOLD Journal · Bath tap buying guide

The best bath tap starts with the bath and the room around it. Before falling for a particular shape, work out where the water connections can go, how the spout reaches over the rim and how the fittings will be accessed later.

01 / Mounting options

Compare the three mounting arrangements

Deck- or rim-mounted taps sit on a suitable bath rim or surrounding platform. Wall-mounted fittings connect through the wall beside the bath. Freestanding bath fillers rise from the floor and can suit a freestanding bath where the floor installation has been planned.

These are installation choices, not simply style labels. A bath without suitable rim holes may limit deck mounting; a floor-standing design needs more than an empty patch of floor.

Three illustrated bath-tap mounting options: rim-mounted, wall-mounted and floor-standing.
Illustrative comparison: 1 rim-mounted, 2 wall-mounted, 3 floor-standing. These are generic examples, not a claim that every option is available for every product.
02 / Spout reach

Check whether the outlet clears the bath rim

Compare spout reach with the distance from the mounting point to the inside of the bath. The outlet needs to direct water into the bathing area rather than onto the rim or the floor.

Also compare the outlet height and the bath’s rim height. For a freestanding filler, allow for its planned distance from the bath. Use the actual dimension drawings; photographs can hide the depth of a rim or platform.

03 / Plumbing and access

Plan plumbing and future access early

Check the required fixing surface, connection sizes, pressure requirements and any separate mounting kit or concealed body. Floor-standing fillers may need a dedicated fixing arrangement beneath the finished floor; wall fittings may need space inside the wall.

Arrange access to serviceable components and check the installation method with a qualified installer before tiling or flooring. Buying a tap first and solving access afterwards can restrict your options.

04 / Daily use

Think about bathing, cleaning and getting in

Consider how you will reach the controls from the bath, where a hand shower will rest and whether a hose can move without catching. Check that the fitting does not obstruct the normal route into and out of the bath.

If a hand shower is pictured, confirm whether the handset, hose, holder and diverter are included. Check any stated temperature-control features rather than assuming that every bath mixer is thermostatic.

05 / Buying checklist

Your bath-tap buying checklist

Compare the entire arrangement before deciding on the finish.

  • Bath position and suitable mounting surface confirmed.
  • Spout reach and outlet height checked against the bath rim.
  • Fixing kit, concealed components and supply connections confirmed.
  • Pressure requirements checked with the installer.
  • Controls, hose movement and future service access considered.

Avoid drilling a bath or finished surface until the manufacturer’s instructions and installer have confirmed the chosen arrangement.

Your questions, answered

Can I use a freestanding filler with any bath?

Not automatically. Spout reach, bath height, floor construction and the planned plumbing must suit the chosen filler. Confirm the complete arrangement before buying.

Can wall-mounted taps be added after tiling?

It depends on the existing plumbing and chosen fitting. Some installations need access behind the wall or a concealed body, so ask your installer before ordering.
